Instead of taking notes in a theory class or rehashing private lesson material you could get elsewhere, you’ll learn the way jazz should be learned - by playing with a mentor. For those new to jazz, there will be special classes to ease you into the genre. This year vocalists of intermediate to advanced levels will be admitted on a case by case basis. They'll have a broader range of experiences. In combo classes, instead of working on lyrics with a dedicated vocal coach, they will be treated as horn players focusing on improvisation. Vocalists will also enjoy singing or scatting with bands and receive vocal coaching in elective classes. They can also participate in the jams. Beginners are welcome to audit for one, two or three days of camp sessions. All participants will have some amazing opportunities for great experiences and musical growth. A typical day at MSJ includes two small group rehearsal sessions playing with a faculty member, plus : 2009 SurveyIn our annual survey, we asked MSJ 2009 participants to evaluate our workshops and to tell us what they wanted for 2010. The response was overwhelming positive. We are truly grateful. Student and faculty feedback continues to shape our programs. ScholarshipsMSJ offers four full scholarships to gifted HS students: The Gifted HS Jazz Student Scholarship, The Paul Phillips Memorial Scholarship, The Bullfrog 13 Drum Scholarship, and The Mike Smith Memorial Drum Scholarship.
