Jazz Camp Workshop Description
The majority of the time is spent in small group sessions led by our world-class faculty. Instead of taking notes in a theory class or rehashing private lesson material you could get elsewhere, you’ll learn the way jazz should be learned - by playing with a mentor. Improvisation, arranging, history and group dynamics are discussed, and demonstrated. Those new to jazz
will be supported as they ease into the genre.
Beginners are welcome to audit for one, two or three days of camp sessions. All participants enjoy amazing opportunities for great experiences and musical growth.
A typical day at MSJ includes two small group rehearsal sessions playing with a faculty member, plus :
• Midday Faculty Mini-Concerts
• Workshops, electives and instrument specific master classes
• A catered lunch
• Jam sessions and networking
An annual survey asks participants to evaluate the workshops and request what they want in the future. The response has been incredibly positive. Student and faculty feedback continues to shape our programs.
MSJ offers one full scholarships to gifted HS or college students: The Paul Phillips Memorial Scholarship. See the Scholarship Page for information. The application deadline is June 1, 2015.
No worries! We serve most any jazz musician. Classes are grouped according to skill level to serve the most advanced (semi-pro and college players) along with the newcomers.
