Instead of taking notes in a theory class or rehashing private lesson material you could get elsewhere, you’ll learn the way jazz should be learned - by playing with a mentor. Concepts in improvisation, arranging, history and group dynamics are all discussed, and most importantly, demoed and played in real time. For those new to jazz, there will be special classes to ease you into the genre. Vocalists will work in vocal-specifc classes with a vocal faculty member (we have only 8 vocal spots per session). There will be opportunities to join instrumental combo classes, where you will have a chance to focus on improvisation and scatting with the band. We also offer vocal elective classes and the opportunity to participate in the jams. Beginners are welcome to audit for one, two or three days of camp sessions. All participants will have some amazing opportunities for great experiences and musical growth. A typical day at MSJ includes two small group rehearsal sessions playing with a faculty member, plus : 2011 SurveyIn our annual survey, we asked MSJ 2011 participants to evaluate our workshops and to tell us what they wanted for 2012. The response was overwhelming positive. We are truly grateful. Student and faculty feedback continues to shape our programs. ScholarshipsMSJ offers four full scholarships to gifted HS students: The Gifted HS Jazz Student Scholarship, The Paul Phillips Memorial Scholarship, The Bullfrog 13 Drum Scholarship, and The Mike Smith Memorial Drum Scholarship.
