This year’s scholarship winners are a sister and brother Ava and Evan Lintz of Morgantown, West Virginia! They will attend the second session of Maryland Summer Jazz (July 29-31) along with their parents.
Ava Lintz won the Paul Marlin Phillips Memorial Scholarship. Ava is an 18-year old musician headed for Chatham University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in the fall. She was awarded a four-year tuition scholarship for her academic achievements. While in high school, Ava played French horn in the Morgantown HS Wind Ensemble and bass for the jazz ensemble and show choir. One of her important instructors has been Jeff Mangone, professor of bass at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh.
Her brother, Evan Lintz, aged 16, won the Mike Smith Memorial Drum Scholarship. In freshman year, Evan played snare drum in the drum line of the Morgantown High School marching band. He serves on the Youth Advisory Board of the Friends of Deckers Creek, and also plays in a band. He has been studying percussion and drum set with musician John James.
Their mother, Jenny, is a trained flutist and pianist with a degree in flute performance and masters degree in jazz pedagogy from West Virginia University. Their step-father, Nathan, is a fretless electric and acoustic bassist. The couple performs regularly in West Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania, often with Evan as drummer and Ava sitting in on bass or guitar. |
